Improving safety on UAE construction sites
Improving safety on UAE construction sites

With a breakneck rate of development in the construction sector in the Gulf in the early 2000s, safety was at times a second thought. That has changed significantly, however, in recent years. Rebecca Kelly, a lawyer with the firm Morgan Lewis, has extensive experience in health, safety, and environment (HSE), and has been practicing in the GCC for more than 12 years. She says that she has seen a “substantial decrease in the number of accidents and fatalities” from the period when she first arrived.

Tips to Minimise Mechanical Space – Leading MEP consultants in Dubai, JPW Group, discuss using space efficiently for vital mechanical equipment
Tips to Minimise Mechanical Space – Leading MEP consultants in Dubai, JPW Group, discuss using space efficiently for vital mechanical equipment

All construction projects that require mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineering works will have to house a variety of vital mechanical equipment. These perform critical functions for the building, including cooling, supplying chilled or hot water, ventilation, and managing indoor humidity. Each piece of equipment requires a significant area for operation, which can greatly reduce the project’s usable space. Additionally, the ductwork and piping needed take up even more space. JPW Consulting Group, leading MEP consultants in Dubai, share these tips to make these mechanical installations more compact and preserve usable space.

HVAC in Sensitive Environments – JPW Group, Leading MEP Consultants in Dubai, Create Specialised HVAC Systems for Sensitive Environments

HVAC systems generally regulate both temperature and humidity in order to create a comfortable environment. These systems also renew a building’s air and filter pollutants to maintain indoor air quality. Many HVAC systems are only temperature-controlled and manage humidity indirectly. However, some residential and commercial environments require a more responsive arrangement.

‘Worst is over’ for GCC construction, expert says
‘Worst is over’ for GCC construction, expert says

The GCC construction sector will see an uptick of recovery this year as growth becomes increasingly evident in the market, an expert has said. David Clifton, regional development director at Faithful+Gould said in a recent article that he believes the market is starting to show signs of recovery – although the sector will continue to face some challenges over the next two years. “2017 marks the uptick of recovery and the GCC’s re-entry to a growth environment for the industry. The worst is over,” Clifton said. “That’s not to say the next two years will be easy — far from it — but we are at last seeing some growth.”

Whole Building Design – JPW Group, leading engineering consultants in Dubai, explains why whole building design works better for projects
Whole Building Design – JPW Group, leading engineering consultants in Dubai, explains why whole building design works better for projects

Construction is a complicated process with multiple parties working on complex systems that must be integrated in order for the project to conclude successfully. Traditionally here in the GCC, separate teams focus on their areas of responsibility, only consulting one another when “necessary”. Communication is the most crucial element in the design and integration process and minimising daily communication, gives no or little opportunity to manage the design and integration proactively or to implement certain strategies during the design phase, such as modularisation, sustainability objectives or obtaining LEED certification. When teams of professionals work independently on a construction project, the lack of collaboration and communication is certain to cause the project to experience significant delays, which will also increase costs.

Breathe Easy – JPW Group, leading engineering consultants in Dubai consider ventilation options
Breathe Easy – JPW Group, leading engineering consultants in Dubai consider ventilation options

High quality, properly functioning ventilation helps maintain a habitable environment by circulating air, providing healthy air whilst diluting and removing pollutants. With various ventilation options available, JPW Consulting Group, leading engineering consultants in Dubai, consider available choices. No matter the type of ventilation system selected, it must consistently deliver optimal air distribution, regardless of external variables such as wind and ambient temperature. Similarly, the airflow direction must be controllable to maintain an ideal environment, especially for sensitive areas such as hospitals where airborne sources of infection can be directed away from patient areas.
